And so it begins … our trip through the National Parks located in California. We had made it to North of Bakersfield, picked a strategic location on route 99 so we could be off to Kings Canyon first thing in the morning. After two hours of driving we traded very straight roads and flat landscape with distant mountain views for very windy, narrow, hairpin curve type roads with grand hills, trees and mountains around every corner.
Our first stop in Kings Canyon was the grove of giant sequoias named after their largest tree: General Grant. After more than a week of hiking the desert, the change in scenery and temperature couldn’t have been more welcome. It was grand, green, and an instant remedy to the “grumpies” that 110 degrees cause….
Our next stop was our first real adventure of this trip: Since the most desirable campgrounds here are FCFS, we didn’t have reservations and had to settle for dispersed camping along Big Meadow road – which we had to find first. Driving the very narrow and windy roads around Hume Lake, Bill definitely deserves major props for getting us there safely. Finding a site wasn’t that hard, but finding a site that is level enough to accommodate a 30foot RV, well… We eventually parked next to a Sequoia we named General Custard. Our view was grand, the site smelled of pine cones and there was a great rock outcropping to climb on. Turns out, adventure comes with its own rewards 🙂
