Day 17 – PEI (that’s Prince Edward Island for short)

After one of our longest days driving we snuggled into very soft and fluffy beds and slept for 10 hours… So our day in Charlottetown, PEI started a little on the late side. Feeling very generous, I spared the boys a trip to Anne of Green Gables cottage (though they had to go into the AoGG gift shop with me), and instead spoiled them with a visit to Freak Lunchbox and Cows ice-cream shops.

We spent the rest of the morning just strolling through town, having a picnic at one of the piers (which had the obligatory “play me” piano – they seem to be a feature in every recognizable downtown in Eastern Canada), and soaking in sea air and sunshine.

In the afternoon we decided to trade the pavement for the sandy beaches of the National Parks of PEI. About a third of the northern shore of the island seems to be designated a National Park – which bode well for us since there was ample room to stretch out, walk, play and swim, actually, it was almost like having a private beach, since there were no houses in sight. The water was surprisingly warm (I remember something in the 50s from 27 years ago, but this was definitely in the 70s) and the ground wonderfully sandy, which made running in and chasing waves a lot of fun (though our children informed us that the Folly Beach waves were better, for boogie boarding at least).
