Day 1—Omaha to Denver

If there’s a more boring drive in the United States, I’d like to see it. The 8 hours were a haze of cornfields dotted with trees that shrank as we moved from Lincoln to Grand Island to Kearney to North Platte.

Impossibly, Northeast Colorado along i76 is even more boring than Nebraska’s i80. This part was made more tedious by the waiting for mountain views that only came into focus after Fort Morgan, about 45 minutes from Denver. This corridor along i76 is only good for ranching, and the flat sparseness brought to mind the buffalo that roamed free there once upon a time.

We pulled into the “Source” hotel in Denver and found a well-appointed room, an upstairs pool with a view, and a fantastic in-house bbq smokery called Smók. They definitely practice their social distancing, which made us feel safe. We rested up by watching Despicable Me 1 and 2 and got to bed really early in preparation for the upcoming trip to Estes Park.
