Day 1 – The Adventure Begins

We are finally on the road!!! Blogging tonight from McFarland Park Campground in Florence, AL, within sight of the famed “shoals” that gave the name to the neighboring Muscle Shoals (better known among music lovers for the Fame Recording Studios). After  a long day of finishing up packing and driving for 7 hours, we strolled the campground and enjoyed our very own home cooked hot dog dinner. While the former had to be cut short (vicious biting insects and steamy temperatures), the latter was quite possibly the best of its kind I’ve ever had – though I concede that it might simply be the fact that there were carbs AND air-conditioning associated with it.

Driving a 30-foot RV has some challenges (uh, turning radius is non-existent? Just think of moving a gigantic box without help and you get the picture), but it is also much more fun than driving the same amount of time in a car. We stopped twice to switch drivers, but otherwise just kept going – hello on-board bathroom, bye-bye disgusting gas-station restrooms! So I can see the motivation for getting a home-on-wheels to call your own. Though I had not anticipated that our XXL rental would look positively wimpy next to the luxury digs people in all of the campsites next to us have!  To quote from a summer blockbuster movie – my observation for today is: “We are going to need a bigger boat RV!”
